Delwin D. Meier

Delwin D. Meier, 69, of Sumner, died Tuesday, October 23, 2018, at Unity Point Health/Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, after a brief illness.

A Celebration of Life will be from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Saturday, November 3, at Meadowbrook Country Club in Sumner. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family for later designation.

Delwin Dean, son of Lavern and Anita (Hartman) Meier was born November 13, 1948 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. He was baptized November 28, 1948, at home and confirmed April 15, 1962, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner. Delwin received his education in the Sumner Schools and graduated from Sumner High School in 1966. He would further his education at N.I.A.C.C. in Mason City focusing on mechanics. Delwin was united in marriage with Brenda Borcherding, June 25, 1983, with Rev. John Sorenson presiding. He worked for Poock Equipment in Sumner, Clay Equipment in Cedar Falls, prior to working for Bremer County from 1972 until his retirement in 2013. Delwin was a long time member of St. John Lutheran Church, Ducks Unlimited, Iowa Trappers Association, Delta Water Fowl, and helped regularly with the youth fishing trip at Frederika. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed hunting, fishing, collecting wildflower seeds, birds, gardening, and was an excellent cook. One of Delwin’s favorite places to spend time was at his timber along the Wapsi. He had an ability to fix anything, and if he wasn’t sure how to, he would learn without using Google.

Delwin is survived by his wife, Brenda of Sumner; four sons, Corey (Darcia) Meier of Sumner, Jesse (Kim) Meier of Sumner, Jacob (Jen) Meier of Center Point, and Ethan (Brittany) Meier of Sumner; seven grandchildren, Keegan, Bailee, Hannah, Emery, Kree, Connor, and Deakin Meier; one brother Lawain (Linda) Meier of Sumner; several nieces, nephews, and extended family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Galen.

We were saddened to hear the news of Delwin's passing. When Delwin worked for the County & I lived on our home farm, he took great care of Whitetail Avenue's gravel road & did a terrific job maintaining it & clearing the snow with the road grader. He always waved & was a long time friend of ours, going back to when Squeek worked with him at the Poock's 66 Gas Station. Our deepest sympathy to you, Brenda & your family. Cherish your memories forever. He will always live on in your heart.
